UK Tory candidate: I’ll never back Miliband ‘the Jew’ – The Times of Israel

Conservative candidate for a local council in the UK has said she would never back “the Jew,” in reference to Labor leader Ed Miliband, Britain’s Jewish News newspaper reports.

Gulzabeen Afsar, who is standing for election in Derby, reportedly made the comment on her Facebook page earlier this week.

“Just can’t take Mr Ed Miliband seriously!! DC [David Cameron] has what it takes to be the future PM,” she initially wrote.

When someone suggested she show Miliband more respect, Afsar replied ““Nah bro! never ever will I drop that low and support the Al Yahud (Jew in Arabic) Lol.”

Jay Stoll of the Jewish LEadership Council called the comments “unacceptable” and urged authorities to “investigate this matter swiftly.”

A spokesman for Labor in Derby told Jewish News: “With anti-semitism on the rise across Europe it is abhorrent and terrifying that a prospective Conservative politician would say something like this.”

A Conservative party spokesman said in response that “Her comment was offensive and wrong. She has removed it and apologized.”

Concerns over Israel loom large as Jewish voters in Britain intend to cast their ballots overwhelmingly for the Conservative Party in the upcoming parliamentary elections, according to a recent poll.

The poll, conducted by The Jewish Chronicle newspaper and released earlier this month, found that Jewish voters intend to support the party of incumbent Prime Minister David Cameron by a margin of 56 percent to 18% for Labor, with 12.5% undecided and roughly 2% each going to the Liberal Democrats and the UK Independence Party. The margin climbed to 69% Conservative to 23% Labor when those who refused the survey or were undecided were eliminated from the results.

By a wide margin, respondents saw Cameron as having a better attitude as prime minister to the UK’s Jewish population than Labor leader Ed Miliband — 64% to 13% — even though Miliband is Jewish.
